So, I’m recovering from what was, for me at least, an interesting Baltimore Comic Con.
Financially? It was not my best showing ever, I didn’t make table back.
Which was a shame because until this year, I was leveling up con to con. But Nickel City set me back (though I made more than table there), and this year’s Baltimore felt like a let down. I actually left a bit earlier than I planned on Sunday to go salve my ego.
But, while sitting in my hotel room, I got to thinking.
Yes, financially it was a train wreck. That’s going to sting for a bit.
HOWEVER
Socially? I got to meet several creators and friends in person for the first time such as Travis Gibb, Heather Gibb, Jerome Gagnon, Jarred Lujan, etc. I got to catch up with friends I normally only see at cons or just Baltimore such as Charlie McElvy, Jeff Rider, James Babbo, etc.
I ran into people who have heard of my books, some people I wasn’t even expecting. I got some GREAT news that I am not at liberty to divulge in a public post.
I got to go to the Ringos for the first time ever, as an anthology I was in was nominated. We didn’t win, but hey, it was great being there!
Networking wise? I got some leads for some potential creative partners.
And as I sat in my hotel room, I went from sulky to getting that fire back roaring like a freaking inferno. I want to create a LOT more comics. I want to have a ton of things to show (plus, in all honesty, I need more than cape books on my table and on my resume).
Plus, looking back, I need to learn how to “carnival bark” more…it’s not something I like to do (not my style), but it’s something I have to do.
So yeah, I may have had a poor showing, money wise. But, looking at everything else? I had a pretty damn good con! And I’ll improve for next year’s Baltimore Comic Con, which will be the silver anniversary edition.
As for what’s next?
I unfortunately will not be at NYCC. I’ll try to meet up with peers and friends outside the con though.
My next con, however, is dear to my heart: the inaugural edition of JewCE (Jewish Comics Experience) on Nov 11-12 here in NYC at the Center for Jewish History. It’s the first con I’m a guest at, and it’s celebrating Jewish contributions to comics! I hope you’ll come out and say hi!
Anyways, it’s back to the various grinds for me. I’ll see you at the cons, online, and elsewhere!
