Hey everyone,
I am (mostly) recovered from the stressful rollercoaster that is the Rook & Knight Issue 1 KS campaign. The funds hit my bank this morning, and therefore various monies have been distributed to various aspects of the project. Chief amongst these (after the team, of course), is getting the books printed! Thanks to Kickstarter’s new fulfillment info, I was basically given the amount of copies of Rook & Knight to print (before any additional add ons through BackerKit, but that’s another story). My plan is to send as many of the rewards to my fulfillment team so as soon as numerous other items are done and sent, we can get started with the BackerKit surveys and get things out to backers faster than the planned deadline. I will be sending my fulfillment team copies of American Dreams 1 and Knightwrath 1 from my stock after my convention (more on that below).
There is a little wrinkle. The new edition of American Dreams, Vol 1, is delayed. Without going into the weeds, BoB and I are waiting on some more information and some other things. It’s less on us and more with other people we have to work with. I’m hoping this will be resolved soon, especially because I can’t wait to see copies in stores, and I want to fulfill R&K KS orders which has the new edition as part of their rewards. But we are making progress, and as the headline says, that in itself is progress.
That’s the thing about this comics biz (and something I need to remind myself from time to time). This is the ultimate example of “marathon, not a sprint”. Every little step you make in your comic career is another step towards your goals and plans. Every anthology short, every issue, every one-shot…you build upon that to make yourself a career.
And along the way, you’ll have ups and downs. For example, I did not make as much money as I wanted from the recent Kickstarter. In fact, I initially had a higher goal that I had to be convinced to lower because of the current funding climate on there. I made that lower goal, there’s no way I would have made that higher goal this time. It was a bit of a comedown from last year, where I made 10k and 8k respectively from my campaigns last year. But on the other hand, I was not expecting to be part of a Ringo-nominated anthology (and thus get to technically call myself a Ringo-nominated writer) at this point. I’m roughly five years into this career, and I only had a hope to be nominated for anything at this point. I’m very grateful to Travis Gibb and the Orange Cone Productions team for letting me be part of the Ringo-nominated Cthulhu Invades Wonderland (I’ll have limited copies of it at Baltimore, more below).
Speaking of my own work, Band of Bards and I have a special deal going on right now for American Dreams.

Wrapping up this latest newsletter, I will be at Baltimore Comic Con! I will be at table E2 in Artist Alley (which is a table position I like, at the start of the “funnel” of the alley). I’ll have copies of American Dreams and Knightwrath. I’ll also have a limited amount of Rook & Knight copies. If you backed the KS campaign, feel free to pick up your copy, on me, at Baltimore. I will also have limited copies of Cthulhu Invades Wonderland, in various covers, to sell! I’ll also be at the Ringo Awards dinner for the first time, so that’s going to be fun! Come on out to Baltimore Comic Con, Sept 8-10!
That’s all from me for now. I think my next post (unless something comes up) will be a look back at this year’s Baltimore Comic Con!
Talk to you guys soon,
DK
