To SDCC And Beyond
Or: "The Craziest Few Days In A While"
Last week, several friends and I took a pilgrimage.
Not to Jerusalem, or any place of faith.
No, we took it to the nerdiest Meccas of all: San Diego Comic Con!
It was a change in plans last year. We originally planned a trip to Europe, and then I was finally approved for a SDCC Professional Badge. It become more economical for us to travel to San Diego (even with the inflated hotel prices) than to travel “across the pond” to London and Paris. And that included for our pal who flew in from the UK for this trip.
How can I describe my experience at SDCC? A whirlwind! Despite having less people (albeit in a somewhat smaller convention center than the Javits), SDCC felt far more packed than NYCC. Lines were capped faster, you could barely move through the (very small) artist alley let around the show floor, there wasn’t much in the way of seating for lunch (thank God for a pro lounge), etc.
Still, I had a BLAST!
Conventions like SDCC and NYCC are sometimes the only times I can catch up with fellow creators, friends, etc I only tend to speak to online. It’s also the best places to network, and I did my best to do so. Lots of business cards were handed out (and a lot of people loved them!). I also got to attend a party put on by the Comic Book Defense League Fund (CBDLF), and I got to see a ton of people there as well.
Now, is there more I wanted to do? Of course. I would have loved to have gotten some face time with an editor or two (or three), but that’s easier said than done sometimes. I would have loved to have sat in (or on) a panel, but it wasn’t quite in the cards this time. Plus traveling with a large group also meant I had to be flexible with my show floor time, with Saturday ending up with me being my longest day on the floor as I went by myself as everyone else was exhausted and I wanted more face time with people (I also had to pick up things for people). But that last day, I had a long chat with a friend that put some wind in my sails, which helped.
Plus my friend group and I had a ton of fun. Escape rooms, D&D, a private screening of Supergirl (surprisingly affordable) and more was on our travel agenda. Plus food, lots of food. We will all have fond memories of the Pope Room at Buca Di Beppo. Yes, Pope Room, long story.
But all good things come to an end and soon off it was back to the day job….
But I got another convention coming up, next week! And I’m tabling there!

I will also be at Baltimore Comic Con, but my table has not been revealed to me yet.
